Diamond anniversary for love at first sight couple
A couple who were set up on a blind date by friends 60 years ago have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Irene and Albert Mitchell, 77 and 79 respectively, went out at the behest of friends and have never looked back since getting married two years after they met, reports the Star.
The pair, who met and started dating near Hillsborough, celebrated their anniversary with 25 close family members at a surprise party in Torquay.
Since their marriage they have had nine children, 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Ms Mitchell stated: "They are all healthy, beautiful children I feel very lucky. We are all a very close family and have parties for every occasion!"
The story may provide new hope and inspiration for those looking for love while speed dating or through online dating where initial meetings may be brief or blind dates like theirs.
The Guinness Book of Records states that a couple from Minnesota who have been married for 83 years are officially the longest married living husband and wife, according to MSNBC.
