As a Dating Coach, it concerns me every time I see someone writing a negative online dating profile.<\/p>\n

It’s a terrible thing to do but still surprisingly common, despite our best efforts to teach people they shouldn’t be doing it!<\/p>\n

So what exactly is a “negative” profile and what’s so bad about it?<\/p>\n

A negative dating profile is one that talks about all the things you don’t want. \u00a0Typical comments might be things like:<\/p>\n

“I can’t believe I’m doing this”<\/p>\n

“No timewasters please”<\/p>\n

“Only contact me if you have a photo”<\/p>\n

“Don’t bother to contact me if you aren’t serious”<\/p>\n

“I don’t know what to write here”<\/p>\n

“If you aren’t in the UK don’t bother”<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, these type of statements appear in an awful lot of profiles. \u00a0The problem is that they make you sound really miserable, jaded and unlikely to be fun on a date. Nobody likes a negative nancy so you should avoid these at all costs. \u00a0If people think you are like that then they won’t be drawn to you and won’t want to spend time with you.<\/p>\n

It’s much better to focus on positive things and talk about the lovely things you have to offer. \u00a0It’s not just about what you are looking for, but what the other person wants too. It’s a two way street and you have to remember that. \u00a0Otherwise it can come across as demanding or downright rude. \u00a0I’m sure you don’t want anyone to think that of you!<\/p>\n

Try and write things like this instead:<\/p>\n

“I’m excited to see what might happen on this site”<\/p>\n

“I’d love you to contact me if you like what you’ve read”<\/p>\n

“If you are also looking for a serious relationship then it would be great to hear from you”<\/p>\n

“Helping others and Keeping Fit are two of the things that make me happy”<\/p>\n

If you’ve written anything negative in your profile then I strongly suggest you take this out and write something more lighthearted and friendly instead. \u00a0You’ll have a much better success rate and many more replies to your messages.<\/p>\n
